Abstract:

Objective Royal jelly is a honey bee secretion that possesses beneficial effects on the nervous system. The present study investigates the effects of royal jelly in reducing convulsion and anxiety in mice. Methods In this experimental study to assess royal jelly's anticonvulsant effects, 25 male albino mice were randomly classified into five groups: control, royal jelly 100 mg/kg, royal jelly 200 mg/kg, royal jelly 400 mg/kg, and phenobarbital. After 30 minutes, strychnine was injected to induce convulsion in animals. The convulsion onset time, the convulsion duration, and the mortality percentage in animals were recorded. In the anxiety model, 35 male albino mice were randomly classified into five groups: control, royal jelly 50 mg/kg, royal jelly 100 mg/kg, royal jelly 200 mg/kg, and diazepam. Anxiety indices were examined by using an elevated plus maze (EPM). Data analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, and p-values less than 0.05were considered statistically significant. Results Royal jelly at 200 and 400 mg/kg doses delayed the convulsion onset time and decreased convulsion duration compared with the control group (p<0.05). The mortality percentage was also reduced with different doses of royal jelly compared to the control group (p<0.05). In the anxiety model, 50 and 100 mg/kg doses of royal jelly increased the time spent and the number of entries into the open arms of EPM (p<0.05). Conclusion Administration of royal jelly can effectively reduce seizures induced by strychnine and modulate anxiety behaviors in mice.

P-86: Protective Effect of Vitamin C and Royal Jelly on Sex Hormones on Phenylhydrazine Treated Adult Male Mice

Background: Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) is used to induce experimental anemia in animal models. On the other hand royal jelly is known as antioxidant compound. Therefore, here in present study we aimed to evaluate the protective effect of royal jelly on PHZ-induced damages in testicular tissue and compare its impact with vitamin C. Materials and Methods: Eighteen mature male mice were randomly divide...

Effects of Topical Application of Royal Jelly on Second-Degree Burn Wound Healing in Male Rats

Background and Aims: Burn injury remain as a major medical problem throughout the world. This injury is accompanied with inflammatory and wound healing responses. Since royal jelly (RJ) has anti-inflammatory and wound healing activity therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the repairing effects of RJ on skin burn- damage. Materials and Methods: In an experimental study, 40 male Wista...

Investigating the Effects of Subchronic Sesame and Flaxseed Oils Consumption Against Seizure and Depression in Adult Male Mice

Epilepsy is a highly debilitating disorder by unpredictable seizures associated with emotional disturbance. One potential treatment for seizure and depression is dietary therapy. So, this study evaluated effects of daily oral administration of sesame and flaxseed oils in depression and seizure. Twenty-one adult male mice were divided into the following groups: control (normal saline recipient, ...

Protective Effects of Royal Jelly on Oxymetholone- Induced Liver Injury in Mice

Background: The present study was carried out to investigate the possible protective effects of royal jelly (RJ) on oxymetholone (OXM)-induced oxidative liver injuries in mice. Methods: In total, 32 adult male NMRI mice were divided into four groups of eight mice each. Mice in groups 1 and 2 were orally administered 5 mg/kg/day OXM for 30 days. At the same time, mice in group 3 received RJ at a...
